Soil
- The temperate rainforest has a rich soil because of the amount of dead organic material on the forest floor.
- The dead organic material is slowly being digested by fungi, insects or bacteria which are common.
- Soil is quite dark and damp, dark because the amount of trees shading the sunlight, and damp because the amount of rainfall and moisture evident in this biome.
- Fertile soil
- The decomposing matter releases nutrients and waste back into the soil which in turn is helpful and good for growing trees.
- Temperature, during the winter months, there is snow that falls and when that melts it increases the moisture of the soil. However an increase of amount of precipitation decreases the amount of nutrients and tends to have an acidic soil.
- Red and yellow clay soil
- Fallen trees, leaves, and branches provide rich nutrients for the soil. As a result this promotes new plant growth.

Land
- Nurse logs
-Very common in forests. A nurse log is a tree that has fallen down and left to decay and die. The tree will stay like this for many years where other plants' roots, seeds will fall, and other plants will eventually grow on top. Many years pass, and other trees will be grown on top (photos below)
- Extremely tall trees, evergreen or coniferous trees
- The trees of the temperate rainforest compete with their roots. The trees place their roots over another trees' roots, competing, and often having the other tree starving for nutrients.
- Less biodiversity than tropical rainforests but still an incredible amount of diversity and biomass
- Many trees have roots near the surface
